50 Years as a Stock Agent by John Nichols

“There was a private feed lot we used for the Live Export trade.  When the sheep came up the race, first they were anthraxed by the vet who needled them and then the buyer would draft out the sheep and would reject anything she didn’t want and they would go into a pen.  At morning tea we would run that pen with the rejected sheep back around again with the good sheep and by the end of the day there were hardly any sheep in there.  We kept mixing them in with the good sheep.”

One of many experiences in 50 Years as a Stock Agent, by John Nichols.  Starting as the office boy at head office for Younghusbands in Melbourne, John worked in the wool department  and then went to the stock department, where he continued from 1945 to 1995, travelling throughout the eastern states of Australia buying and selling sheep.  With a great knowledge of the sheep industry, John‘s ability to tell a great yarn has now been captured in this book.

All sheep graziers and Stock Agents will enjoy this book and will be able to recount similar situations they have experienced.   John describes the golden years of the sheep industry and the deals done by some of Australia’s most colorful characters.  You won’t be able to put the book down.
